Tip 184 - Recognition

Leaders need to be recognized and encouraged as they continue to work on difficult and challenging goals. Building leadership skills is hard work, and if leaders are not encouraged, recognized, and supported along the way, they will likely fall back to their old ways. Coaches can help leaders stay focused, move forward, and develop skills.

Consider these recognition coaching tips:

  • Keep the purpose in front of the leader.

  • Remind leaders why they want to acquire leadership skills.

  • Target successes that are important to the leader early in the coaching process.

  • Celebrate milestones along the way using something meaningful: a certificate, personal note of congratulations, and/or a humorous reminder.

  • Maintain attention to the coaching plan, including where the leader has been, what has been accomplished, and what the next steps are for moving forward.
